The Kintampo Health Research Centre (KHRC) conducted phase one of the Targeting Subsidy Study in Techiman from March 2022 to October 2022. The study is using different pricing mechanisms and testing strategies to increase LPG adoption and use. It is seeking to investigate whether Ghanaians who use charcoal currently will switch to LPG under the Cylinder Recirculation Model.

The first phase of study enrolled a total of 524 households out of 816 visited. Across 175 households, the study also conducted personal exposure to air pollution for both men and women between August and December 2022. These measurements were done at two time points – baseline and endline, with the goal to characterizing the gender-dependent distribution of air pollution reduction benefits that can be achieved through LPG adoption.

As part of the preparatory activities to commence phase two of the study, the KHRC team welcomed four of its collaborators from the Columbia University and University of California (Prof. Kelsey Jack, Prof. Paulina Oliva, Mr. Flavio Malagutti and Ms. Linnea Graham) on 15th January, 2023 to KHRC, where a series of meetings were held to finalize the design for phase two of the Targeting Subsidy Study aimed at testing the feasibility and effectiveness of smart subsidies as a targeting strategy to increase LPG adoption and use among low-income households.
