The study, sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gates foundation serves as a platform to collect data that will inform the development of innovative strategies to optimize pregnancy outcomes for mothers and their newborns

PRiSMA seeks to enroll pregnant women during the first trimester of the pregnancy (less than 14 weeks), but participants may be enrolled at any time at or prior to 20 weeks gestation.Screening is done to determine the eligibility of the participants in the PRiSMA study.

As part of the screening process, an ultrasound exam is done to verify gestational age of less than 20 weeks. This comes after the participants have met the prescreening criteria and have provided informed consent. Study participants will be followed through their pregnancy till they deliver and for those who have live births till their infants are a year old. In KHRC the study is carried out in the Kintampo North Municipality and Kintampo South District. A total of 3,000 participants will be enrolled in three years from KHRC.
