The Kintampo Health Research Centre (KHRC) laboratory participated in a one-month Laboratory Quality Management Systems (LQMS) Mentorship Programme. LQMS aims to ensure that laboratories, particularly those in developing countries, adhere to the requirements of ISO 15189, a standard for medical laboratory quality and competence.
Under the supervision of Mr. Isaac Selasie Wemegah, Laboratory Quality Management Systems mentor to KHRC, the programme at KHRC involved a range of activities including review of documents, assessment of the implementation of existing policies and procedures at various units, among other activities.
Expressing his satisfaction with the progress made, Mr. Wemegah commended the KHRC Laboratory for its commitment to implementing the LQMS programme and establishing the necessary systems.
Initially led by the private sector, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in collaboration with its partners has been at the forefront of implementing the LQMS in selected facilities. The GHS has trained mentors to oversee and enhance the internal implementation of the LQMS.
This mentorship programme provides an opportunity for laboratories to bolster its overall quality management. The GHS aims to get more government health facility laboratories accredited with this initiative.
